Summertrail

Melius Una Drumline.png

Description

Melius Una is written by Jonathan Kirby for the Euro Taiko Expo on 22 and 23 October 2022 in Hamburg.  Melius Una is a joyful combination of up-beat and down-beat rhythms.  Annick Robberecht added a drumline approach to the rhythms which gives the piece even more fun and spectacle.  Switching from the drumline version to the original version is straightforward, so learning this version and playing along at ETE in October in Hamburg is no problem.

Requirements

When signing up, we expect you ...

  • have a comfortable and healthy playing posture

  • have a basic understanding of kuchi shoga (don, kon, doko and tsuku)

  • have a basic understanding of taiko dynamics (switching from playing loud to playing soft and vice versa)

  • are able to play 'rolling' doko's continuously

  • are able to play 'proper' dons continuously,

Challenges & goals

  • This piece uses a lot of down-beat hits.  We will have a lot of technical exercises to 'uplift' the left hand.

  • This piece varies often in dynamic, we'll practice this using Shoji's catch-down-and-tap-up technique.

  • The drumline approach implies playing on three drums.  We will extend the basic kuchi shoga vocabulary with new terms to unambiguously refer to all three drums.

  • The first goal is to learn the different rhythms and their variations.  When all those feel comfortable, we'll build up the arrangement.  Playing the piece by heart might require more time than we have available during this trail.  Members of the (aspi-)Yoroki taikoTeam will keep working on this song during their trainings afterwards.
